Routines for Reasoning

“Teaching students to think and reason is perhaps the greatest challenge we face as math educators, and these routines provide clear pathways to do so.”
—Grace Kelemanik, Amy Lucenta, and Susan Janssen Creighton

Routines for Reasoning explores a set of powerful routines designed to help all students develop their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. This sample from chapter 1 sets the foundation for the four instructional routines, including:

  • a look at the eight mathematical practices and their relationship to each other
  • how the mathematical practices provide opportunities for all students (including supporting the needs of special populations), rather than hurdles
  • five guiding principles for instruction that supports the needs of English learners, students with learning disabilities, and all other students as well.
